About the lab
The NeuroRobotics and Control Laboratory (NCL) is directed by Qiang Zhang, who is an incoming assistantprofessor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alabama . The NCL is seekinghighly motivated students for two Ph.D. graduate research/teaching assistant positions (Fall 2023) to conductresearch in the fields of:
1.Neuromuscular system modeling and control in normal and neurologically disabled individuals.
2.Advanced machine learning based control approaches development for nonlinear dynamic systems,such as exoskeletons and functional electrical stimulation.
3.A dvanced neural machine interfacing technologies (sEMG and ultrasound and their applicationto neural control of prosthetics , orthotics , computers , and other assistive devices.
Thisis a great opportunity to work in a highly multidisciplinary research lab .

Required Qualifications
1.A recent BS/MS degree in Electrical Mechanical Biomedical Engineering or related fields,
2.Background in mechatronics design of robotic devices, linear and nonlinear control,
3.Research experiences in one or more of the following areas: robotic manipulation and haptics , signalprocessing and classification and biomech anical analysis or related fields ,
4.Excellent oral and written communication skills .

AdditionalPreferred Qualifications
1.Experience in human related experiments (especially clinical population), human motor control andlearning , design and control of assistive devices , embedded system design , mobile app development,and musculoskeletal modeling,
2.Programming skills (MATLAB , C/C++, LabVIEW , etc)
3.Record of peer reviewed publications.

About the PI
Dr.Qiang Zhang received the B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering and the M.Sc. degree in MechatronicsEngineering from Wuhan University (WHU), Wuhan, China, in 2014 and 2017, respectively, the M.Sc. degreein Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, in 2019, and the Ph.D.degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), Chapel Hill, NC,USA, and North Carolina State University ( NCSU), Raleigh, NC, USA, in 2021. He was an Advanced
Rehabilitation Research and Training (ARRT) Post Doctoral research fellow in the Closed Loop Engineering forAdvanced Rehabilitation at the UNC/NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Zhang was a
recipient of a number of awards, including the finalist for the Best Student Paper Award of the 2019 IEEE/RASEMBS International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics (ICORR), the 2021 UNC/NCSU BME DepartmentPh.D. Student Research Award, 2022 ASME DSCD Rising Star Award, and 2023 Dean’s DistinguishedDissertation Award, UNC Chapel Hill.
